Roman's Steps

May 2010
Its been a busy month! Roman went through the surgery well and so happy its behind us.
I am going to step it up a notch with Roman's colors.  He is not catching on as fast as he is with other things.
However, he can separate colors, so its not a color bind issue. I sum it up as he is wanting to
learn bigger things.
For instance, he counted to five recently, then came up and counted to ten. He can resight nursery rythms. He came up to me today and said, (as he spelled he had his hand out and with his other forefinger tapped a new finger for each letter), "this is how you spell my name momma...R O B O."  It was adorable!! So he has the first two letters correct for his name and nickname. He keeps asking me to write the letter A. Its amazing what he is picking up having a smart older sibiling!
Recently he started sleeping in his big boy bed and now the kids share a room. Seems to be going well, althought we miss them sleeping with us (on occasion..otherwise its nice to have the room now!)
So, I will take more time with colors and will post some new activities when I come up with them:).
Oh I almost forgot to mention that he knows all the basic shapes. I have no idea how!
I was just sitting there one day waiting for Azah to finish up some school work and drew a square, triangle and circle. He go them all right. Then I drew a star and heart and he got those right, as well.
At his pedi visit, we learned he is 3ft tall and 30lbs. He is going to be a tall boy, for sure!
We hope you all are blessed this "chilled" Montana evening.

APRIL 2010
Life has been busy!!

Roman just had his second birthday party over last weekend. He officially turned two yesterday!
Here is a picture of his handmade birthday card.

We recently went on a trip to California. The weekend before our trip, Roman got his first haircut! I am pleased, he looks so cute. He had some wild hair! I hope to start preschool homeschooling with another child and mom in May. (Hi J and C!)
Many adventures are sure to find us this beautiful and warm Spring. He is having his dental surgery
in May.
Times such as this, really make parenting tear at your heart, you so very much want
to take over and let them do anything to you instead of your child. I would, without a thought  trade places. For a few hours for a procedure or for eternity for my kids to be safe. However, there is nothing I can do in that manner for him. Other than be strong and pray. I guess there are many things that are much worse than this. So I will be grateful its not something more serious.

Roman is really coming along, last week he walked up to me and said with Christmas enthusiasm,
"Look mommy, "one...two...three...four...five!" WOW what a precious boy we have been handed. He is so sweet.
Its amazing, I look at him and slowly see his baby hands and fingers slipping away into a slender boyish football throwing grip. Its another part of parenting that pulls at those strings. At least for me it does. For myself the transitions, the stages from infant to baby to toddler to child, are the hardest. I pray my bond with my children grows and we are only closer as time goes on. I don't think I could bare not ever feeling my little boys amazing hugs and lovey kisses. Life goes on and we all grow!! However, we are so blessed, my sweet husband and I, to realize how fast it goes and to take advantage of each moment....another reason I want to homeschool. I do not want anyone else spending more time with them than I do. There will be plenty of time for that when they go their own way into this beautiful world as remarkable adults...off to make this world a better place!

Ok, a little sappy, but for those who know me best, that's ME!!
May you all find peace in your day!

MARCH 2010

Roman believes EVERYTHING IS BLUE!! So, I have decided to do my color recognition differently

than I did with Azah. With Azah we were one color at a time. However, I believe when a child
refers to all colors as the same color, introducing a few at a time will be best. Then he can see that one is different

from the rest. So I am starting with the colors of his Rody MAX. Something he uses each day.

Orange for the body, yellow for the saddle and the emphasis blue for the spots!

If a child gets stuck on a color, don't give them the answer, change the question and they will learn

faster! Then give the answer after you have tried the second question. For instance, if you ask,

"what color is this", they give the wrong answer or no answer. Ask, "can you show me/point too".

Today I made two circles for each of the colors we are learning. I chose two because he knows "one"

and "two". So why not have a few lessons in one! I laminated and introduced.

To introduce this activity in a fun way, I took an empty oatmeal container and cut two slits in the plastic top. I then asked him to put a certain color in the box. He loves making things "fit" so this was a fun way to learn. I also told him they were circles. He knows circles very well because of our indoor tot trampoline. lol. Then as he put the color in we counted, "one" "two" and then moved on to the next color. When he picked the wrong color I would explain what color he had and then ask him for the right color. He really gets engaged when his sister enjoys the activity and wants to join in, then they take turns. He loves to do what she does. This was a fast, "what can I do, I don't feel well but want the kids to get some work done today" type of project. So, when I am feeling better, I will add some fun paper to the box. That will get him even more interested.

You can continue on with this "cheap" idea for awhile. You can add different colors or add more of the same colors for counting. More shapes. For ABC and Number recognition, you can make small flash cards and do the basic idea we have going here.

I made two slits in the top because I didn't want Roman to get frustrated that he couldn't make the circles fit right and give up. Fitting was really just a lesson hidden in a lesson;).

Color Scrapes

This project is so easy peezy for mommy and loads of fun for little ones. I don't think I know one homeschooling mommy who doesn't do some sort of scrapbooking. So save those scrapes mommy. With this I just took a solid yellow card stock and cut up squares in orange. Good way to add in those shapes again! Then I gave him some glue and he went to town. Every few minutes I would ask him what color was which. Azah was doing a similar project, so look for Azah's on her page.

I will update on more color projects soon, if you have any questions, please ask!
